The Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI) is one of eight semi-autonomous institutes of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The Society created the Institutes in order to address the specific needs of the many disciplines it represents. The Society formed AEI in October of 1998 by a merger between ASCE’s Architectural Engineering Division and the National Society of Architectural Engineers (NSAE). Since that time, AEI’s membership has grown to approximately 7,000. The American Society of Civil Engineers has a total of 140,000 members.

The Architectural Engineering Institute’s mission is to serve the building community by promoting an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to planning, design, construction and operation of buildings and by encouraging excellence in practice, education and research of architectural engineering. To accomplish this mission, all professionals within the building community are represented including fields traditionally associated with civil engineering such as structural engineering and construction management as well as non-civil engineering fields such as electrical, fire protection, and mechanical engineering; architecture; interior design; and facility management. It is the diversity of our membership that allows us to develop integrated solutions to the nation’s infrastructure challenges.
